Female friends and family members are usually invited to come to the baby shower and bring gifts for the coming baby. New families in America, especially, have been starting out with basics for their first born by holding these events. It has long been both a celebration and a way of helping expecting mothers out. Not every baby shower will be the same. In some cultures, for example in Jewish tradition, celebrations for a baby are only held after the birth.
